When Can I Start Running with My Baby? A Parent’s Guide to Jogging with a Buggy

Becoming a parent doesn’t mean giving up your love of the outdoors, or your running routine. In fact, for many of us, that daily jog becomes a moment of peace, a mental refresh, or even quality time with the baby in tow. But it raises the big question…
When is it actually safe to run with a baby in a stroller?
Let’s break it down, based on expert advice and real parent experiences, and help you feel confident when the time comes to lace up your shoes and head out.
How Young is Too Young?
If you’ve been eyeing up your jogging buggy and wondering when your little co-pilot can come along for the ride, here’s the general rule: wait until your baby is around 6 months old before you start running.
Why 6 months?
That’s the age when most babies develop enough neck and head control to handle the gentle bumps and movement of a jog. Until then, their neck muscles and spine are still growing and just aren’t ready for that kind of motion.
Before 6 months, it’s totally fine to use your stroller for walks only, especially if it has car seat adapters or a full recline seat like the ones on our Out’n’About Buggies.
Getting Started with Your Running Buggy
Once your baby is old enough here are a few tips to get going safely:
Safety First
-
If you're using a Nipper v5 lock the front wheel of your buggy when you’re running, this gives you better stability, the Nipper Sport has a fixed front wheel which is made for running.
-
Always use the 5-point harness to keep your baby secure.
-
Attach the wrist strap so the buggy stays with you, even if you stumble.
-
Give your buggy a quick once-over before each run (wheels, brakes, seatbelt).
Start Slow & Smooth
Choose flat, even paths for your first runs. Think park loops, canal paths, or smooth pavement. Avoid rocky trails or hills until you’re both used to it.
Start with short sessions,10–15 minutes is plenty at the beginning. Build up your distance and pace slowly as you and your little one find your rhythm.
Make it Fun
Bring along a favourite toy or clip-on book, pop on a sunshade, and maybe even play some music. Some babies love the movement and nod right off for a nap mid-run!
Real Talk: Every Baby Is Different
Some babies are totally chilled in a running buggy from day one. Others take a few tries to warm up. That’s perfectly normal! Keep an eye on their mood and body language, if they’re getting fussy or overwhelmed, it’s OK to pause or call it a day early.
